STROKE REHABILITATION

Post-stroke rehabilitation involves physicians, rehabilitation nurses including, physical, occupational, recreational, and speech-language as well as vocational therapists and mental health professionals.  And, you.  Quite a team!

Physicians have the primary responsibility for managing and coordinating the long term care of the stroke survivor including recommending which rehabilitaion programs are right and best address the patient's needs.  Yes, patient.  And, be patient.  Physicians are also responsible for caring for the individual's general health and well-being including those things necessary for preventing another stroke like controlling blood pressure, preventing diabetes and eliminating such risk factors as smoking, excessive weight, high cholesterol, high alchohol consumption.

Specialty physicians like neurologists usually lead acute-care stroke teams and direct patient care during hospitalization.  Then,  they often share the knowledge gained  and participate with the long term rehabilitation team.    Other subspecialists often lead the rehabilitation stage of care, especially phsychiatrists who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Sum it all up, "you're in good hands."
